History and origin of the Hapkido

After the surrender of Japan in 1945, Yong Sul Choi, of Korean origin and exiled of his country, returned to his native land: Korea.

Y.S.Choi had studied since his childhood with a famous Japanese master called Sogaku Takeda.

The style dominated was Yawara or Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu.

Once in Korea, he took interest in traditional martial arts of his country and specially in Taekyon.

Years later, with a little help from his first student Seo Bok Sop, he created Hapki yukwonsul.

His first students, Ji Han Jae and Kim Mu Hong, will stand out from others.

They are the people responsible for the modern Hapkido.

The symbol of the Hapkido is very characteristic: An eagle catching an arrow between his talons.
