Who is the Founder of Hapkido?

Choi Yong Sul founded Hapkido based initially on Daito Ryu Aïki Jutsu techniques. At first, Choi used the name Yu Kwon Sul, then Hapki Yu Kwon Sul. His student, Ji Han Jae changed it for Hapkido (may be a great influence from Japanese Aïkido).

What is Hapkido?

Hapkido is a Korean martial art described as "The art of co-ordinated power". "Hap" means together or uniting, "Ki" means energy and "Do" means the way or path.

What types of techniques are involved in the practice of Hapkido?

Hapkido includes joint locks, throws, takedowns, strikes, kicks, chokes, pins, skill in falls and rolls, weapons like short stick, long stick, knife, rope and cane.

What benefits are there in training Hapkido?

Aside from the excellent self-defense aspects, there are a number of other benefits. Hapkido is very good all round physical training improving aerobic capability, flexibility, balance, speed, strength, self-control and awareness.

Are there tournaments in Hapkido?

No, Hapkido is not a sport but rather a self-defence oriented art.

How long does it take to get a 1st Dan Black Belt?

Training three times per week, around four years. If you want to get the belt quickly, then perhaps Hapkido is not right for you.

Is Hapkido for everybody?

Anyone over the age of 15 and maximum of 50 can start practicing Hapkido (of course there are exceptions).
